The project tackles the regeneration of the plot where currently lies the neglected gunpowder magazine of via Tartini, fallen into disuse several decades ago. The program of the intervention consists of a kindergarten with its private garden, a public garden, and an underground public parking. These buildings are part of the infrastructure contribution in return for the redevelopment of the former industrial site of Manifattura Tabacchi, an imposing complex with an area of about 100.000sqm located in proximity of the site.
The layout defines the public garden as a connector linking the cycling and pedestrian path along the Mugnone canal to the core of the district. Furthermore, the landscape design intends to define a place where to stay, relax and play. The whole complex has been imagined as a device able to combine the different functions expected: the kindergarten, the public garden and the underground parking with its distribution and ventilation systems. The kindergarten is configured as a one-storey building with a double courtyard. This morphology has been identified in order to guarantee the continuity between the interior and exterior floor level that, due to hydraulic prescriptions affecting the area, was impossible to obtain with a perimetral garden. The building has a lamellar wood structure and, thanks to several bioclimatic and technological strategies, it will be certified as Leed Platinum, the highest award concerning the sustainability of buildings.
