Corte dei Liutai
Urban design – Landscape
The project for the rejuvenation of Corte dei Liutai aims on the one hand to unveil its hidden potential while on the other hand to mitigate the negative aspects currently present. First of all, the perception of the space as an ‘urban interior’ is emphasized having in mind that the term courtyard should not be confused with the term square. Corte dei Liutai is indeed imagined as a quiet oasis adjacent to Piazza Andrea Costa.
The enhancement of the greenery is crucial within this strategy: plants characterize the place and introduce symbolic references to its history with the insertion of pomegranate trees whose fruits (rimon in Hebrew) represent the Jewish people that inhabited the so called ‘ex ghetto’ of Pieve di Cento. The intervention articulates a continuous device along the perimeter able to define different spatialities and provide seats while screening the conflicts on the neighboring facades.
